The Retinoscope is an instrument used in assessing the refractive state of the eye. It work purely based on optics, light entering the eye is reflected back from the fundus and the power of the eye determines where the focal point would be, when this focal point is known we can estimate the refractive state of the eye and provide the necessary correction. The Retinoscope is a very handy tool to be used during outreaches since it makes it easier to arrive at the refractive state of the eye without having to go through patient responses thus it is very suitable for Children and even adults who may have issues with communication. The retinoscope is also used to help estimate the accommodation lag of individuals, this is used with presbyope or adults to ascertain the power they would need for their near refraction.

The Ophthalmoscope is also a very essential tool in the field of visual health, without the ophthalmoscope it would be very difficult if not impossible to diagnose pathologic conditions of the fundus. The Ophthalmoscope and the retinoscope are friends and work within the same optical principles, which is probably why they always go together even in their buying. Light from the Ophthalmoscope illuminate the inner of the eye and the reflections come back to the clinician enable him or her to see what in wrong or going on at the back of that eye. It is an essential tool for the diagnosis of glaucoma which is a leading blindness in Africa. Diseases such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Hypertensive retinopathy, Maculopathy, Age related Macular Degeneration and a whole lot are diagnosed with the help of the Ophthalmoscope.

In some part of the World health facilities do not even have eye specialist to have save the sights of patients or to even correct refractive errors, for instance in a recent post from Vision Aid Overseas they need a eyecare worker to take of patients in a deprived community in the Asian Region and they weren’t getting some, but the sad thing is that those here, those available to work and serve and even volunteer their service do not get the basic necessary equipments such as these to help them operate well as they ought to, and because the population knows the practitioners are there they most often than not wait until things escalate with their vision before visiting the Doctor, such an ironical turn of events. Nonetheless we of @bettervision would like to thank our supporter for their continual love, the OR Set (Ophthalmoscope, Retinoscope Set) was bought with steemit earnings and some support from our backers. The Set cost 3500 cedis which is equivalent to 669US dollars, the instrument was ordered from India early February and recently just arrived. It came with a Monocular Estimation Method Card, a rechargeable battery and its charger. It would be making it easier to work and would ease the pressure on our already jaded instruments when we have to go on outreaches. Once again we say ayekoo to everyone, thanks for the love.

What is @bettervision about?
@bettervision is is a project initiated by @nattybongo and friends to give back to the society the knowledge and skill acquired through the Optometric Studies in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. It is an outreach system where we visit the less privileged communities to offer free eye screening services and education to the people within the community
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To reduce or prevent vision loss through diseases such as glaucoma, cataract and refractive errors.
To enlighten the majority of the Ghanaian population about the importance of proper visual care.
To conscientize people on the need for regular eye checks
To get more people to have their wards screened within the Critical periods of a Child’s Vision Development; thus from ages 3 to till about 10 years.
To help the blind and people with low vision live a better life within the society through education of the general public to stop stigmatization.
To help in the fight of extreme poverty that puts the health of people at risk

Our greatest gratitude goes to @fundition @adollaraday @surfyogi @girlsfoundation @bleepcoin @ackza @indigoocean @nanzo-scoop @steemstem @demotruk @pennsif @steem-ambassador @kasho and @wafrica for helping to make the aims and objectives of @bettervision a reality.
