Big Red Is Back

Here we go again, when in doubt just reboot it.

I'm not awfully crazy about reboots, not that they have not worked in the past, look and the success of films like Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, and the new Spider-Man with Tom Holland. When studios go for reboots, it's usually because it's a safe economic bet, the franchise already has a pretty loyal fan base and even just making an okay movie will be money in the bank. However there are times reboots just go horribly wrong, best example off the top of my head would be the last Ghostbusters movie, that tried to push woke intersectional politics and not staying true to the fans and story.

The new Hellboy looks like it ticks all the boxes, but it's going to be pretty hard to out do director Guillermo del Toro, who has very specific style that worked beautifully with the first two films. This is pretty worrying because the studio decided to go for an almost unknown director, who now has to come close to what del Toro gave us the first two times. So the reboot has a pretty high bar to live up to, and I'm personally not 100% convinced they'll manage to achieve that here. Then there's also the new lead David Harbour from Stranger Things who has taken over from Ron Perlman, which is like changing Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, it's going to take some time to get use to. I'm actually very hesitant on if this is going to do well with the fan base, let's hope it makes up for some of this in the story.

This Hellboy remake gets a 6.5/10

This could go either way, only time will tell.
