I tried just now to add @steembasicincome to my fanbase in steemauto for a daily automated upvote but it says 'wrong user name' What am I doing wrong? Checked the spelling twice and it's not me.

I'm not sure what issue you were facing. But on the Steemauto Fanbase page, if you scroll down below your own fan settings, there is a top fans section:
You can follow @steembasicincome by pushing the 'Follow' bottom after our name and follower count.
