Des'ree 🎶 Rediscovering a Unique Female Voice

in ReggaeJAHMlast month (edited)

Not so long ago I came across a YouTube video about the musician Des'ree, who was born as Desirée Annette Weekes on November 30, 1968 in London, England. Her father - also a musician - is of Barbadian descent and her mother from (British) Guyana, who introduced Des'ree to the musical styles reggae, calypso and jazz music. After the video I got interested in who this musician is and boy what was I in for a treat.

Firstly, I want to introduce you to this song by her called Life, which I heard when I was growing up and I remember that I enjoyed swaying to this song, with all the positivity bursting from it, without it being too "showy". I'm so happy I rediscovered this song and will definitely keep listening to it again.

Who remembers Fire, which Ms. Des'ree collaborated with Babyface on? The visuals of the '90's 🙈 really had a moment and their voices blended so well together. The song is a nice playful love song that I also used to hear on the radio and have seen the video on tv.

And here's Kissing You, which was the soundtrack for the Shakespearean movie Romeo & Juliet, which brought her even more success. What a strong presence and voice, that truly fits with the story of Romeo & Juliet; I feel sad about the end of the story and yet can't help feel a kind of hope flowing through that voice.

That's it for today and what did you think of Ms. Des'ree's style and/or voice? Do you have any other of her songs that should've been included? Let me know in the comments below. 🎧

Long time I haven't heard this chica! That life song brings back memories.

I never even remember the Romeo and Juliet sound track LOL

I know right, it's those artists who made good music and you know their songs, but not their names. I was happy I rediscovered the music.

And haha how many times Romeo & Juliet have been broadcasted on tv and I didn't sit and listen to the song 🤦🏽‍♀️.

Sad story though, how and why she stopped producing music. She got sick or something and wanted to focus on her personal life. Hope she keeps making music though.
