Interestingly, here in Australia, when you get to the pharmacy they are obliged to ask if you want the generic version of the prescribed drug. I often wondered why. Who would actually benefit from that monetarily (apart from the one buying the prescription)?

Really? How interesting, I wish that was true here as well. I mean, I don't mind. I've learned to find out what the specific drug does first and then find others that are more generic, but most people don't do that.
It's a great question - who would benefit from that? well, I don't know, but I imagine there are few medical manufacturers and it's pretty much the same guys - because let's face it, if there was this small company who made cheap, affordable alternatives to expensive medicine, they wouldn't survive long on the market, I think...
