Philippine Shallots

Today featured is the shallots grown in the Philippines, which is grown in small percentage compare to red onion. The preffered onion for Philippine market is the much bigger single bulb onion, and most of the shallots grown here are exported to other countries like Indonesia and Singapore.

Shallots are kind of onion which belong to allium plant variety which also include garlic.
Compare to onions, shallot has more flavor, sweeter, some little spicy and with mild aromatic smell.
Unlike onion which is single bulb, shallots are bulb in cluster attached on its base.
In the Philippines, shallots grow in the Ilocos region, and a red variety which is a little spicy sweet grow in San Jose, Nueva Ecija and in its nearby towns.

Propagation of shallots is usually in bulb Smallest bulbs from harvested farm are kept and use for the next cropping.
Shallots can be eaten raw, and best in salad dressing and vegetables dishes. Also can be a subtitute for onion.
