Hello, tasteemers!

I guess there's no turning back now with these food escapades. This sixth edition of Kim's Taste is about a famous sweets and delicacies shop in Bacolod. You haven't been to Bacolod if you won't visit Bongbong's Piaya and Barquillos. Its famous delicacies are perfect for pasalubong or gifts to your loved ones after roaming around Bacolod.

Bongbong's have many branches across the country, but it's homegrown in Bacolod so I think it's a different experience when you visit where it originated than buy in one of the branches.

Before I delve deeper into the review proper, I would like to inform everyone that this is another deviation from the standard of Kim's Taste. This time, I will be focusing on Bongbong's delicacies more than its ambience, service, or price range.

Remember: If you happen to be in one of the food spaces in my review, we might have different preferences, as well as experiences, so our ratings might not be exactly the same. As always, this is exclusive for @tasteem.

Okay, let's get down to the real thing. As for *Bongbong's, let's gobble down its sweetness!

BONGBONG'S PIAYA AND BARQUILLOS
Bacolod's Finest Delicacies

Bongbong's Piaya and Barquillos has a souvenir store or pasalubong center in Rizal St. corner San Juan St., Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. They also have an outlet at SM City Bacolod South ing and other snack bars and pastry shop across Bacolod.

Bongbong's started as a backyard business back in 1984 when Reynaldo "Bongbong" Villan, hence the name, started his own piaya factory at a capital of Php 80.00. He was a bakery helper before that time so his work provided him the keys for greater opportunities.

What started as a piaya business venture became a premier delicacy company with an addition of one delicacy per year. Now, Bongbong's is a staple souvenir and pasalubong center in Bacolod.

Let's indulge into their finest delicacies. So, be prepared for a photodump that will certainly make you drool. I bet Napoleones should be first in the list.

IMG20180128114023.jpgNapoleones. Bacolod (or Negros Occidental in general) is known for its sugar industry so Napoleones is just a fitting local delicacy. It's a puff pastry with a custard-like filling and a sugar glazing on top. It's so sweet and delicate that if you're a sweet tooth, you'll definitely love it.

The thumbnail photo is a Macapuno Tart. A mouthwatering tart with macapuno as filling and topped with meringue. There's another tart variant called Pastillas de Manga or Mango Tart that's equally scrumptious as the macapuno tart except that the filling is mango.

IMG20180128114519.jpgPiaya. Of course, the delicacy that started it all. Piaya is a common delicacy in Negros Occidental where muscovado sugar is abundant. It's an unleavened flat bread that's stuffed with muscovado sugar. One famous flavor aside from the muscovado is the ube piaya. I love to eat this delectable delicacy during long bus rides.

IMG20180128114201.jpgBarquillos. This delicacy is a crispy rolled wafer that's brought by Spaniards. It's just a cookie batter that's thinly rolled into a hollow tube.

IMG20180128114048.jpgOtap. Otap is another puff pastry that is common all throughout the Philippines, but originated here in Cebu. It's usually oval-shaped that's a combination of sugar, coconut, flour, and shortening.

You think that's all? I became tired, so I'll just leave these photos here for you.

Other items that are good for pasalubong:

IMG20180128113841.jpgSquid Rings

IMG20180128113855.jpgBanana Chips

After taking those photos, I ended up spending Php 1,000.00 as my pasalubong to my family and workmates. I ended up bringing this one box of goodies while walking along Lacson St., but it was all fun knowing that I will definitely make my family happy with those gifts.
