How Do Nicotine Patches Help You Quit Smoking Anyways? [Quitting Smoking End Of Day 11] - D00k13 Digest #370

in #dtube7 years ago

What up my Steemians, welcome to the @D00k13 Digest, just finishing up working driving home thinking a little about why having a few drags off my vaporizer last night has left me feeling crappy today. I decided not to put on my nicotine patch on today in hopes it would help with how I'm feeling not having more nicotine entering my system. Pretty decent day over all, beautiful weather, just this lingering upset stomach from slipping on my quitting smoking.

It seems as if after 11 days quitting smoking I have lowered my nicotine tolerances and trying to smoke has left me feeling like the first time all over again. It all has to do with how tolerances work and withdrawal. Essentially when you use the nicotine patch it gives you a consistent low dose to eliminate the craving caused by drops in your blood nicotine levels below your tolerance level. As you use the patch your tolerance will slowly drop which decreases the intensity of the craving until the point where going without becomes tolerable. When you suddenly through extra nicotine in a large dose into that equation you increase your tolerance levels all over again or like myself today feel ill for having surpassed it.

Why did I smoke last night? I am feeling bad for having contributed to my Jerry being injured and my efforts to show him compassion are leaving me less active. With less activity comes and excess of energy turning into anxiety. I simply reached for the most familiar relief I know, my crutch, my vapourizer. Not very pleased with myself, 11 days is pretty good but I should have been able to hold out if only I forced myself to be active instead!

Time for a walk with Jerry then a run. I am leaving Jerry at home tonight for the run so he can continue resting and hopefully be walking normally by the end of the week.

You got this buddy. I too am struggling to quit and it is very hard. With the work that I have which is stressful everyday it is very hard not to smoke. I turned to vaping which helps lessen my sticks. I really need to quit.

Yea daily stress levels play a huge part into the complications of quitting @watersnake01. Yea it’s the quitting vaping Step I am on, just as challenging but at least less damaging than cigs.

Good on you for quitting, how long have you been trying? What’s your longest period without even a drag?

Thank you for stopping in with support and encouragement 💪
Keep at it, we can do this!

It's been an on and off situation for me. So far the best that I can do for now is lessening the sticks gradually. Two years ago I was able to quit for 6 months. I don't know what happened after that. I need to completely stop sooner or later.

Don’t wait until you have health concerns because then slipping back to smoking becomes a real complication!

You must want to quit and not just like it’s a good idea to you to quit but you must actually have a desire to make that change in your life for the benefit of your own health!

Think of it this way, each cigarette takes seven minutes off of your life which is seven minutes less you get to spend with your life partner. That is seven minutes more for each cigarette that your life partner will have to endure without you!

@d00k13 when trying to stop something we can make great progress by stepping down. And even if you still need one once in awhile its still great progress if you have stopped for 11 days before that. Great job on the 11 days.

Thank you @solomminer that’s exactly what I think also! Hard to just go cold turkey while maintaining a sense of composure. Just need to try I take less and less each time and eventually the craving will disappear after that it’s just the metal habit. The habit will be the hardest part for me as I really enjoy the act of smoking and simultaneously giving up smoking weed complicates the situation 😅

Thanks again for the support and encouragement 🙏

Keep it up man! Nicotine is one of the hardest drugs to shake, especially if you have been doing it for a long time or using high doses.

Yea for sure, I now totally understand why people have a hard time with quitting and require things like the patch!

Yeah. I speak from experience. Best success iI ever had was cold turkey.

Nicotine is like a bad girlfriend that you just can’t stop going back to. You know she’s bad for you but you just keep convincing yourself it’ll be different this time.

    It won’t.

Good luck. You can do it!!

I believe you can do it. Gradually you will end it man

    I do hope so 🤞
