Captain Marvel was surely a huge hit, and now one of the highest grossing superhero movies. The reason I see why it became a hit because of the hype, and considering the heartbreak by people on what happened to Avengers: Infinity War. Likewise, people believe that she will save everyone on Avengers: Endgame, as it will be shown a month before the Avengers movie.
