90s Dancehall, many say it is the golden era of the music and that the dancehall artistes these days need to go back to their roots.
The funny thing is, in the 90s, people were saying the same thing about 90s Dancehall compared to the genre a decade before. Many did not like it but the youth gravitated to it.
It is the same thing happening now with the so called trap Dancehall. Many from the older generations claim not to like it but the younger generations flock and relate to it. It is the sounds of the Dancehall times. It is a never ending cycle.
Today I want to journey into the 90s as I got the link to one of my favorite DJs Spotify Playlist. Who is the DJ? None other than Jazzy T from the Renaissance sound. He has been building this list for a minute but I only found out about it at the end of July.
90s Dancehall Round 1

One thing about Dancehall from the 90s that I like is that the songs are more playful and the artiste strive on being versatile. Just check out this song by Nardo Ranks called Burrups. The sound / word or whatever you wanna call it, "Burrup" becomes the major part of a song about two lovers in an argument. Another thing is that story telling is at play in this song as well. What would the 90s be without the Scare Dem crew. Elephant man, Harry Toddler, Nitty Cutchie and Bumb Dandy Might. The crew got their break from the War Lord Bounty killer and quickly caught on. Scare dem crew brought the shock factor into the 90s Dancehall and gave us a vibe that was missing in the space.
Montser Shack Crew, much like Scare Dem brought that group vibe into Dancehall. The crew was made up of Ghost, General B and Round Head. This song bellow called Eastside to this day gets the Dancehall hyped up...well when it is in swing. Ghost's voice is so distinct it can never be mistaken for another.
Who said 90s Dancehall wasn't as slack as the dancehall these days? We can clearly see the path was set for what is being spun on the turn tables now. Position By Terror Fabulous is a Dancehall classic many can't get enough of. Just as much as some people nowadays can't get enough of Vybz Kartel's XXX rated songs. It is a clear evolution of the genre and the times.
