I've gotten similar answers when I've asked the same question. I find it a weird answer because the roti shops only have a couple different sauces and spices, easiest stuff to make in the world, but the places seem to do good business. However, when I've cooked traditional Indian foods for ethnic Indians, most aren't familiar with the dish and don't like the flavors. Authentic South Indian food can't be compared, it's like an explosion of flavors in your mouth, not for the faint of heart.
I met an Indian immigrant here about 6 months ago that gave me a young curry tree after I reached out to facebook for curry leaves, as it's uncommon here. It was really interesting hearing his take on the country and how he sees the Indian culture, way of life, and food have transformed here. We both talked of the joy of owning a Bajaj RE too.
