THE FOOD OF THE MIND

There is nothing more interesting about music than the fact that it is loved by most; it is that one thing that the majority, if not all, love doing. I do not really know why humans love music this much, but I am certain of the fact that music is beautiful, and people love beautiful things.

Smiles usually find their way to my face each time I encounter a video of people singing music that should be foreign to them. The fact that music has a way of making people attempt languages that they might never have spoken in their life actually erupts the smile. Nevertheless, I am beginning to smile less these days; not because it is no longer the case, but because it has now become really rampant, most especially as it concerns Afrobeat. It is almost as if the music world knows no bounds with regards to language.

Without argument, I consider music a universal language; humanity's extravagant love for music has earned it that position. Thus, the first and major reason why music is a universal language is the fact that it is loved by most. In my opinion, every other reason resonates from that. It is by first loving music that a person gets to experience the qualities associated with it; and only then can they experience its universal ability.

Some call it the food of the soul, and they might actually not be wrong; music enriches the mind. But beyond that, music has the ability to create connections between people of different backgrounds and cultures, regardless of the language with which it is expressed. It does this with its ability to invoke emotions, and when it comes to emotions, language or cultural background is never a barrier. It is all about what the ear hears coming into synergy with what the heart feels, and sometimes, words or the meaning of what is being said may not be necessary.

Being that which is loved by most, music has a way of creating a community of people regardless of their cultural background. Given the universal ability of music, artists are able to tell stories that know no bounds, conveying messages that are not limited by language. With this being possible, they are able to create a community of people regardless of their cultural background.

I have found myself listening to music that resonates with me, irrespective of the fact that it is not originally from my culture, and I am certainly not the only one in this boat; most people are guilty of this too. All that happens is a synergy between the artist and the audience; and sometimes it is not really about the words that are being spoken by the artist, but about how well the entire music connects with the audience emotionally. Music is indeed a food for the soul; or better still, a food for the mind. It is with this quality, alongside the fact that it is loved by most, that it becomes a universal language.
