If they raised flocks or mined mineral wealth and took it away with them, maybe they did alright out of it.
Shame to build a house, then watch the entire community slowly leave, though.
They were mainly miners and their families but unfortunately the wealth went elsewhere...It was a hard life and when the mine closed it was inevitable the town would decline...Took a long time though. It's worth a visit.

I'm fond of a spot in Innes National Park, Inneston. Ghost town now, but used to be a gypsum quarry.
The quarry's still there, but it's full of very salty water. Great fun swimming, like the Dead Sea, you're extra bouyant.

I've been there but a long time ago. Might check it out.
One of the best ones I ever went to was Kingoonya. Was a whole town there completely abandoned. Houses open, school house...All open to wander through. Not sure if it's still like that but was very cool back 20 years ago.
