✎ Lisbon, the city of seven hills has been a European hotspot for at least the past 3000 years. It’s always been a melting pot and many cultures including the Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and last but not least the Moors, have left their mark on the capital of Portugal. There have been many defining moments in history that shaped the city and its people, like the earthquake of 1755 or the 25th of april revolution, but somehow the Portuguese people know how to turn these events into something beautiful. Many songs and poems are written about the rich history of Lisboa and they even developed their own unique music called fado. Similar to blues music, you don’t have to know Portuguese to understand the sadness and sorrow. If you keep your ears open, you will definitely hear some local musicians playing fado when you’re walking down the old neighborhoods of Alfama. The city of seven hills may carry a lot of history, but young people from all over the world bring life to the city and it’s become the perfect blend of old and new. Take a modern environmental friendly e-step or take the 100 year old iconic tram 28 to get to your destination. But if it’s not the historic architecture, the music or the great weather you are after, you will definitely be impressed by the Portuguese food and whereever you go, you can’t leave Lisbon without trying their famous Pastéis de Belém.
