Hey man, nice review! I've also done a review of this film, some time ago (2 years!):

Interesting review, thanks. After re-watching this film recently, I went online and discovered a lot of different theories about the engravings and symbols, etc. such as the three turrets being symbols of the spiritual world (the trinity) while the four turrets are symbolic of the material world (four seasons, four elements, etc.) and the 7-headed beast symbolizing the 7 deadly sins. An alternative view which is interesting is that it's Johnny Depp who is actually the Devil, who got caught in the material world, but who left the nine engravings centuries ago as a path for him to get back to the underworld if he ever got caught in the material world. People who hold this theory point out that in many scenes Depp is accompanied by smoke.
