Blessed new week Reggaejahmin Hiverz.
Waahhgwaan?
Today I came across two Dancehall songs and riddims I feel I had to share with you. What I am seeing with these two singles/riddims is that dancehall is going back to its roots, the trend that has been talked about seems to be slowly taking shape. For those of you who do not know, the trendy dancehall nowadays is the so-called “trap Dancehall” more on the rap vibe as well as dancehall that sounds more like Afro Beats. But don’t get it twisted. Dancehall gave birth to Hip Hop and Afro Beats but then one can argue the roots of Jamaicans are from Africa, so it is all one family.
Laa Lee - 1NE Riddim
The first riddim I came across while on my commute was a suggestion by the Spotify Ai, well both tracks were but that's not the point. The name of the riddim is 1ne Riddim and it was produced by Frankie Music and Mafia Lee. The lead single on the riddim was what I heard, it was sung by Laa Lee with song title, the same as the riddim; 1NE Riddim. Listen to the track below.
What I like about this one is it has that dancehall bounce but Afro beat counts. A perfect dance formula and no doubt the moves will be simple to catch.
Elephant Man - Cool Reminder
The next track is a song by Elephant man on the Cool Reminder Riddim produced by Notnice Records. The producer has been an advocate for creating more root Dancehall type beats while at the same time experimenting in the emerging trap Dancehall genre. The video is full of Dancehall royalty and the visuals along with the track give you that real deal dancehall feel. Listen to the track below.
What I like about this track besides the obvious killer riddim is the repetitive but catchy lyrics and the history lesson that Ellie tells through them. Listen out for that Rihanna line, he tells no lies.
