Cyberpunk Busy Street by Donglu Yu
Cyberpunk was born from the 80s vision of what the years after the new millennium would be. The new virtual era, brought to light by the rapid Cold War Era technological advancements, together with the appearance of computers and the Internet, created many questions in people. What would the results of these new amazing inventions be?
We see similar questions popping up regarding cryptocurrencies. Many cyberpunk games up to now use a centralized "credit" system. We can expect new cyberpunk games from the next decade to use decentralized cryptocurrencies and other advancements from this era.
However, many elements will stay the same. Cyberpunk, retro and futurism are one and the same, and they are eternally tied to the visions born in the 80s. Colorful discos, shiny neon billboards, multiculturalism...
Cyberpunk will always see purple and blue as the dominant colors, derived from discos and neon lights. Cyberpunk might be about the future, but it's not anyone's future, it's the future through an 80s scope, a nostalgic view of a past dream of future glory.
We will never have a cyberpunk future because it belongs to an alternate reality. We will, however, always dream about what could have been, and it will always share the aethereal spirit of an 80s disco displayed through a hologram.
