A Little Bit of Christmas Spirit from Suriname 🎇

With the holidays at the front door, I would like to bring some Surinamese Christmas spirit into the Hive community. As mentioned in my previous post about reminiscing the December vibes, Suriname usually has a lot of activities and traditions this month. One of those is having concerts and/or being in church.

A famous song that you will hear at concerts, on the radio, on the tv, at church and Christmas diners is Gloria Fu Kresneti. This song is in our lingua franca Sranang Tongo and it's about unity, peace and the goodness that will fall upon us, if we all live in the Christmas spirit. I have done my best to find information about the song online, but as per usual a lot of Surinamese information has yet to be digitalized. So haven't found the original songwriter.

I couldn't even find the text of this song online, so I had to listen to the song and type it all out and then tried to translate it into English to my best capabilities. When you'll hear the song, the melody might sound familiar. I wouldn't know if the Surinamese artists composed it from another well known Christmas song. If you have any information, feedback is welcome.

Let's sing along together and lift up the spirit during these holidays, especially for those who are in lockdown and have to be without loved ones or families. Christmas is all about hope, peace and love. This song embodies that best by formulating how we are all connected, we're all brothers and sisters of each other. Doesn't matter what creed, color or from where you or your ancestors have come, we're all Children of Suriname and we should live in peace with each other by living in the Christmas spirit.

I must say, as with almost every Christmas song, that we should always have the Christmas spirit in our hearts all through the year and not just during the holidays. I would like to know in the comments below, what your holiday traditions are.

Ou Christmas traditions in my tiny country of the low lands: Well, I suppose its mostly about family dinners, and for some dinners with friends. We celebrate two days of Xmas, usually the first day 25th is with family. The second day (26th) is with friends, or the other part of the family, depends a little from person to person. When I say family dinners, I mean a LOT of food, from the first second to the last of that day, its eating eating and more eating. I suppose one of the old days traditions, was to go to church on Christmas eve, but only a few do. Religion levels are not that high anymore in the Netherlands.

Here there are a lot of Christians who still go to church.
It used to be a tradition in my family, but the past few years we didn't follow through with it and now with the partial lockdown, church services are limited to a maximum of five or ten people and some church services go live online. So that's a plus.

Yes, here in Suriname it's also a lot of dinners. At one time we had to make a road-trip of it; four different places in one day. It was crazy, but fun 😅
Yesterday we had a smaller dinner with just our parents and siblings and am grateful for that.

It seems to me a beautiful thought. The meaning of this song alludes to the sentiment of Surinan citizens who obviously want to live a life of peace and harmony.

Thank you and yes our history is that of divide and conquer politics by the colonizer. Our citizens are from all over and they were pitted against each other. Not that it's all peace now, but we've come a long way and we do strive for that peace and love.

We're all one, we're all human beings.

We were @rarej his parents and he took a picture of their tree.
