The two almost outermost rectrices of the male are 15 to 18 cm long, much longer than the body that supports them. Hanging behind the flying male these feathers make a buzzing sound.

These birds have a diet based on flower nectar using their long extensible tongue and also catch insects on the fly. It requires frequent feeding while they are active during the day and decrease their activity during the night to conserve energy.

The theory of the origin of the name "Doctor-bird" is somewhat unstable. It has been said that the name was given because the crest and black erect tails resemble the top hat and long-tailed coats that doctors used to wear in the old days. Other hypotheses of schools of thought believe that they refer to the way in which birds throw flowers with their beaks to extract the nectar.

This bird has also been an object of superstition. Indigenous peoples who are settled in the Antilles and the circumcaribe region upon the arrival of the Spanish in the fifteenth century. Aramacos spread the belief that the bird had magical powers. They called it the "bird of God", believing it was the reincarnation of dead souls. This is manifested in a folk song that says: "Doctor Bud, a cunny bud, a hard dead bud." (It is an intelligent bird that cannot be easily killed).
